Welcome to our newest NSP Board member Sunit Bhhattari. Sunit is from Nepal and came to Canada to study 3 years ago. He has now graduated and is working. We are thrilled that he has joined the board.

Deupal Boran Project is Complete (2024 / 2025)

This past year, NSP USA and NSP Canada, collaborated on the Deupal Boran project. This project brought water and taps into the village. The villagers were very appreciative. 
NSP Canada also received a $5,000 grant from The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), which was utilized to complete the reservoir for this project.
Thank you to everyone involved. The villagers were still instrumental in helping to complete helping to complete the project with their labour. They made gravel by hand. They dug trenches in order to lay plastic pipe down the mountain. This pipe carries water from the source at the top of the mountain to the reservoir. Let the pictures tell the story!​
Next Years Project (2025/26)
Banakali Primary School
Thanks to Babulal, our project leader, we will pursue this new project. The school is located in Foksingtar (municipality), Ghising Danda, (Village) ward No 3 in Mahabharata village development committee. Classes run up to grade 5 and service about 40 students. There are 4 teachers.
​The school is in dire need of drinking water and a two room toilet with water. 600 meters of pipe, a tap and toilets are required. School furniture (benches and a table  -10 pieces ) and a metal armoire for book storage are also needed..  Fencing the play yard is also requested for safety, as the drops around the playground can be substantial.
The cost of the project is $10,000.00 Canadian Dollars.
Therefore, this is our New Fundraising Campaign as our budget is depleted.
Your generousity in the past has been phenomenal. We look forward to you giving again. These students really need your help.

I’d like to begin by thanking everyone for their continued support. As a committed donor base, we truly rely on your generousity and appreciate your loyalty.  Without you, NSP would cease to exist.​

The Water Installation Project in Deupal Boran is our current project.
NSP is still engaged in the completion of this project.  Starting last spring, work had to stop during the Monsoon Season which began in June. Based on current donations, our original plan had been to complete the project over a 3 year period,  Very generous gifts allowed us to accumulate enough funds to complete the project in one year, instead of three. However that required a new approval letter from the Social Welfare Council (SWC) in Nepal.  Every NGO must account for projects and must be approved by the SWC.  A new requirement this year included a visit to the village by a member of the SWC where the project is being completed. With travel and the viewing of all aspects of the water project, the process took 5 days. The visit is now complete and we have the approval letters. Without these letters, money cannot be deposited into a Nepali Bank. As of today, we are hoping the appropriate transfers can be completed.  Wiring money internationally is a very strict process. This is a good thing and came about as a result of money laundering.  So, while it slows down the process, we are feeling more confident and secure in the transfer of funds.  

Our loyal group in Nepal, under the direction of Babulal and Suraj, were very busy this fall accumulating materials needed for the Deupal Boran project. (when not bogged down by bureaucracy at the SWC) Here they are laying out the route of the piping they will trench down the mountain into the village. We are excited to hear more from them about the progress of this project. We should be able to inform you of its completion before the next monsoon season. 

Binod Syangtan:
Binod, our most recent College bound student, has arrived in the US to study for a  Bachelor of Business Studies (BBS) at Southeast Missouri State University.  Binod's father was one of our porters on our trek in 2001. His father was just 12 years at the time. He was substituted for his older brother as our porter. He quickly  became a favourite of the students on the trek.  Binod, his son, was supported by NSP Canada, during his elementary and secondary education. He was an exemplary student and fast forward...  he is now in college. He was accepted into an American University, with a scholarship.  Needless to say, we are all very proud of Binod.

​Samjhana Ghalan (Babulal’s Daughter)
Samjhana arrived in Australia last September.  She is in her first year studying at Western Sydney University International College. She is working on a diploma in Information and Communication  Technology. After finishing her diploma she will complete a degree in Information Technology at the university. She is working at a restaurant as a waitress to earn extra money to live.

Sunit Bhattarai 
Sunit has graduated from Sault College with a diploma in Cyber security. He is currently working in Mississauga.
We had exciting news from Sunit his week. He got a 3 year Canadian work visa.

Kunsang Syngtan
​Kunsang has graduated from his certificate Program in Australia and has enrolled in the next level of education, a BBS Bachelor of Business with a  Hospitality major, a three year degree. Currently, he is also working in Sydney in a restaurant to make money and gain experience.
NSP Canada has provided financial support for these students from the NSP Education Fund. Donors can specify if they would like to direct their contributions to this fund. Again, thank you for your continued support.

In Nepal there was a celebration called Dashain and it is a celebration of family. It is a very important holiday to them.

Our NSP family both in Nepal and Canada have been busy gearing up for our next project in an area called Deupal Boran. It is a fresh water installation project and is scheduled to be completed over the next 3 years. 
In the first phase, we will build a reservoir.
The second phase will install plastic pipe over a distance of 16 km from a fresh water source high in the hills. 
The third phase will bring taps to houses across the hillside villages. 
Each phase will cost $7000.00 CDN The first phase is starting this fall after the monsoon.. The total cost is approximately $21,000.00 CDN.
​Earlier this year, we applied to and received a $5,000.00 grant from the Elementary Teachers Fund of Ontario (ETFO) which we will apply to the cost of the reservoir. Fundraising will hopefully allow us to reach our total annual goal and finish the project.
As you are well aware the competition for your charitable donation dollars has become increasingly challenging. As I was reminded today by one our long time supporters, NSP is still totally made up of volunteers and donations go directly to the people of the villages. NSP is truly grass roots.
We are planning to launch our next fundraising campaign in November. Please consider Nepal School Projects. We really need you.
Samjhana is our newest Student scholarship recipient. She is now studying in Australia. We are very proud of her! 
Dear Fran maam namaste, 
I am very glad to hear from you. I hope you and Murray sir are doing well there. How are things there? Today was the first day of my class . I was a little excited and nervous but  it turned out well. I made some new friends. I am getting used to everything here. I also went for a work trial in a restaurant  and I got hired .It's been like two days since I started working . Everything is going well here. It may get challenging to manage time with work studies at first but I am sure I will overcome all the challenges in upcoming days. The letter is for the NSP website. I will keep writing to you. Looking forward to seeing you soon. Sending lots of love for you and Murray sir.

Sunit (in Canada) has completed his course work in Cyber Security and is working as an intern. He will graduate in the new year. He is a delightful young man and is working very hard to achieve his goals. Congratulations Sunit!

Spring is here and I'm feeling excited about the work we have been doing and the new projects we are about to raise funds for. Our next project is the Deupal Borang water supply project, in Kavre. Our team in Nepal is hoping we will continue to raise funds, as they have so much work they would like to complete. Babulal and his team also rely on NSP Canada for their livelihood and inflation in Nepal is very high right now. We would like to keep them working.
Currently, women in this village walk to the river at the bottom of the mountain. It is impure water. It takes 1.5 hours to return to the village with water in containers. You can imagine how the installation of the water taps will greatly enhance daily life and health of the villagers.  Water borne diseases are now an issue in this village, particularly with the children.

We have decided to concentrate on providing clean drinking water to the villagers. Sanitation has become a secondary focus. In terms of schools, moving forward, we will be doing repairs  on our existing schools.

Deupal Borang Water Project, Kavre: 

A description of our most current water project. Picture this:

The clean water source is 4 kilometers up the mountain, above the village. The water is  transported through 4 kilometers of plastic pipe, from the upper section of the mountain, by gravity, to a reservoir just above the village. The water is then transported through plastic pipe from the reservoir to a series of taps. Each tap is situated near a few individual households and are scattered over the hillside. 8 taps will supply water to the 40 households in the village. The local school will also have their own tap in order to have access to this drinking water.

All trenches for pipes are dug by hand, by the villagers. The reservoir is constructed by our team and the villagers.  All stone for the reservoir is created by the villagers hammering rocks by hand into various sizes of gravel. The land for the reservoir is excavated to accommodate a 10,000 liter tank. The foundation of the reservoir is built using the gravel and rocks created by hand. It is then finished with cement. A wire fence is  constructed around it for safety.
The villagers donate the land for the reservoir and NSP provides the expertise. NSP assumes 75% of all costs, mainly in materials and specialized labour. The villagers assume the rest by providing land and labour.

Prior to building, an application must be submitted by NSP Nepal. They must describe the nature of the project and its stakeholders. This information goes to the Social Welfare Council in Kathmandu for approval. It is an involved and time consuming process from start to finish.

As you know fundraising has been difficult lately, so we are changing our format somewhat. 
We feel after our current project and after doing some research, that perhaps donors are more interested in donating to specific items as part of a whole. Therefore, we have broken down our newest water project into component segments that you can choose from if you feel more comfortable with this approach. You can also choose to just give an amount as well, without  your donation being assigned to a specific item.

In our next fundraising campaign we will be supplying you with the cost of each material used in the process, like the cost of pipe, hardware, taps and cement. The rocks are donated by the villagers and turned into gravel at no charge.
Please think about the benefits these water projects bring to the local villagers and the hardships they endure without clean water. Fresh drinkable water should be a right and not at the whim of the government. These are poor people who need our help. They are also very proud and hardworking people. They sincerely appreciate everything you do for them.

Our mission is the same. We will  provide fresh drinking water, build latrines and repair / build schools. The Nepalese government is not present in these outlying areas and our work is imperative.
 
NSP has continued with projects over Covid19 with $100,000.00 invested in 2020 and $100,000.00 invested 2021. NSP Nepal has just completed another $50,000.00 worth of projects in 2022. 
Your donations have been hard at work and we thank you.

1) The roof of this school was in need of replacement. It went from leaky slate tiles, to a red metal roof. Now the kids will stay dry.

Both Sunit and Kunsang were supported through elementary and secondary school by NSP in Nepal and are now able to pursue their dreams!

Sunit has arrived in Brampton, Ontario to study:
Sunit, the son of Suraj, our translator in Nepal, will be studying Cyber Security in a two year program at Sault/Trios College, Brampton Campus. He has found a shared accommodation and will be working as well. His program begins May 8, 2023. We wish him all the best and are very proud of him.

Sunit arrived in Brampton, Ontario last week to study:
Canada for me has been a safe, calm and a pleasing place to be. It is really clean and beautiful with a systematic approach to everything. Starting from the day I landed to the current day, it has been a surreal experience for me. I have been really grateful that I got the chance to be in this country which has welcomed me with open arms. Thank you NSP for supporting me on this journey.

Post Covid Vision
NSP’s Post Covid Vision is to continue to better the quality of life for the vulnerable populations in rural Nepal. We are firmly established in the villages and our Nepali partners continue to work hard in partnership with us.
There is so much news to report since our last newsletter! Our 2021 projects have all been successfully completed. Unfortunately they were a little over budget, due to the cost inflation and an increase in the cost of goods in Nepal. Both NSP Canada and NSP USA were able to cover these overages…..this year.  2022/23 will be a challenge.

New Projects for 2022/23

High School Students Join us!
Last June, grade 8 students from Erin Centre Middle School, Sonika, Jude and Afnan, were winners in a charity challenge. Their group chose to research Nepal School Projects. They have since reached out to us and requested to join NSP as Junior Board Members.  They will bring skills to the table like website design and social media skills.  They are also fulfilling their secondary school, volunteer hour requirements. We are excited to welcome them. Watch for changes!

​Kunsang is in Sydney, Australia
Kunsang is having quite an adventure and is working hard at restaurant school in Sydney. An NSP sponsored student in Nepal for elementary and secondary school, he was able to meet the requirements to attend an international post secondary school.  He shares an apartment with 3 others and works 2 jobs to supplement his income and gain experience for when he returns to Kathmandu. He is missing his family but having a great time.

Southern Academy of business and technology (SABT)
SABT is one of Australia's most creative, vibrant, and varied educational institution. It is a registered vocational education and training provider centrally located with easy access to Public transportation and retail outlets. I have chooses certificate IV in commercial cookery leading to diploma in hospitality management course. It will enhance my cooking skills and help me shape my culinary arts as per professional demand. The course duration is 78 weeks and diploma in hospitality management is of 28 weeks.
Nepal School Project (NSP)
Nepal School Project has organized and conducted various programs which has brought dramatic changes in the life of people. NSP has supported me from the very beginning (Class nursery ) to (grade XII) . My father only studied till grade 2 . With support from NSP , I have already passed +2 and applied in Australia for further study. NSP has conducted  various such as latrines, drinking water projects, roof maintenance , bag distribution, voluntary works and scholarship programs. A dramatic changes in various areas has lead people easy access to drinking water as they do not have to carry far away for 1-2 hours. Children have access to school where they can pursue education.

         I would like to thank each and every member of NSP ( Fran ma'am, Murray sir, Betty ma'am, Linda ma'am, Oscar Signoretti, Jenny Signoretti and Terri ma'am ) who have helped me throughout this journey. It would not be possible without your love, support and generous donation. I also wish to help and support NSP in the coming days.

       It is pleasure to introduce myself as Kunsang Syangtan a permanent resident of Kavre Palanchok, Nepal. I was born on 16th November 2001. To begin with Academic background I completed my secondary education examination from Creative Model Academy Boarding High School , lazimpat ktm securing 3.35 GPA in 2018. I continued my education and completed School leaving Certificate Examination (grade XI and XII) securing 3.11 GPA a in the year 2020 from Sann International secondary school, Kathmandu. I also worked at restaurant for two years. Right now, I have applied in Australia for further studies. I chooses Australia because of affordable living and studying expenses, secured teaching learning environment and quality education.

Remembering David Jackson
Sadly, David passed away at 92 on April 2, 2022.

When climbing to base camp on Mt. Everest, in the the 90's, David came across the most heartbreaking needs of the rural people of Nepal. He became devoted to working with Nepal School Projects. His most recent trip was in 2017, to visit the NSP projects, in the villages in the Kavre District. Salina, Terri and I were fortunate to have been able to visit David at his home in March. His eyes twinkled as we reminisced about Nepal. All of us are saddened by his passing and we will miss his enthusiasm, positivity and support.
