Earthquake Relief

We are deeply saddened by the tragedy that has hit Nepal. Fortunately, we have been able to learn that to date, none of our colleagues, Board Members and friends have been killed by the earthquake. This is not to say they haven't been affected. Their life has been turned upside down and they are frightened to the core. Their families have become homeless and they are living with little to no food and water. They have been forced to start a new life amidst chaos. To make matters worse, many of the projects that have been completed and that are underway through NSP have been damaged or ruined. We are committed to supporting the wellness of our friends and colleagues throughout this tragedy. We need your help. Please visit our DONATE page to make a donation to our relief fund.

We will post an update as we further develop a plan of support and to report back on how your funds have helped NSP children, families, and friends. At this point in time, all funds will be directed toward the provision of shelter, food, and safe drinking water. We will also be working hard to protect or rebuild NSP projects, such as latrines, health posts, and schools. Your support will be deeply felt by the villagers.

Below are two letters from one of our Board Members in Nepal asking for our help.

Spoke with Sanachman today (a NSP Board Member in Nepal). He seemed to be terrified. He told me that there is no loss of human life in his village, but almost every house in the village is damaged. People are spending their lives under open sky. No govt. relief has reached there and I guarantee you it will not reach. Life is very difficult for those people. Please think about them. Babulal (NSP Board Member) is also back from the village. He is safe and sound. The newly constructed latrines are all damaged. Same is the case with NSP schools. Babulal has brought some pictures from the village which I will send it to you tomorrow. On Sanchaman, he told me that they are living under open sky with nothing- no mattress, no tents nothing. And to make matters worse it's been raining since last night.

Thanks a lot for your concern. We are shell shocked after the quake. Don't know what to do. I was at office when earthquake came. Kids and wife were at home. They rushed out of the home immediately after the quake and were able to save themselves. I rushed from the office and came home. When I reached home after 20 minutes or so, there was a big quake again for the second time. As you know I was staying at the top floor, a part of the floor crashed down causing damages to television set, refrigerator, groceries and utensils. We stayed in a make shift tent in an open place for two nights. I found a place nearby which is ok and will be shifting there. The landlord taking advantage of the situation has demanded 60,000 NRS as an advance payment. Similarly, I have to get other essential things as well. Would be grateful if you could help me out of this crisis.Got to start life in a new manner again. It's a huge damage, but I have been fortunate enough that everyone is safe and sound.

We are happy to report that we have been able to implement some of our action plans. Below is a list of some key project achievements!

  • Field officers in Nepal are in place.
  • The latrine projects have started.
  • We have enrolled one of our NSP Nepal Board Members, Ashmita, in an Excell course
  • 10 libraries have been approved for our schools from the Room to Read project.
  • We have made a connection with a Canadian based NGO solar power organization (www.sunfarmer.ca) and are actively researching the appropriateness of one of schools (Sulo Phokara) to receive solar power for computer installation.

It is all very exciting!
